Whilst not actually approved by General Assembly (but discussion has begun on it), Occupy Melbourne will strive to support a model for direct democracy to be applied at the next Local Elections here in Melbourne later this year.
The people should have a say in their CBD. The ability for all Melbournians to participate in a new, grassroots political movement right here in their city could pave the way for future electoral reform towards true democracy in this nation.
Whoever runs as the "figurehead" candidate against Doyle is purely irrelevant in terms of leadership. There is no heirarchy in direct democracy, we are only seeking to replace the system of political heirarchy.
It could be an exciting time for Melbournians, with a "zero-dollar" approach, in terms of both funding for the campaign as well as the running/administration of it if successful, based on the ethos of people power.
